CHARACTER
Name: Lily Evans
Canon: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Age: 17
Timeline: Summer 1977, between Lily's sixth and seventh year at Hogwarts.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a

Personality: It’s hard to think of Lily Evans outside her role as mother to Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. Lily’s life and existence seems to be defined by her last moments, sacrificing herself out of undying love for her son, and not without cause: she is without question a creature of love and compassion, arguably her most defining traits. It is ultimately her love for her son that creates that protective spell that saves him from Voldemort in Godric’s Hollow, and continues to protect him for the next fourteen years. Even prior to being a mother, Lily was known to be a kind and caring individual to many that met her. Remus Lupin described her as the type of woman who saw the best in others, especially when they could not see it for themselves, and mentioned that she was there for him in a time of his life when no one else was.

Probably the biggest example of Lily’s caring nature can be seen in her relationship with Severus Snape, her childhood friend. Snape was the first magical person to meet Lily, and the first one to tell her that she was a witch. The two grew up together, close but unlikely friends who continued to stay in contact even after being sorted into opposing houses, Gryffindor and Slytherin. As they went through school, the pair were pulled further and further apart as Snape became more deeply involved with the Dark Arts and would-be Death Eaters. Lily tried turning a blind eye to this despite her other friends’ concerns and protests out of loyalty to her friend; she tried to see the best in him despite her intolerance for Dark magic and his apparent support for Voldemort’s genocidal campaign. However, the final blow came during a scuffle between Snape and the Marauders in which Lily tried to defend Snape, only for him to call her a “mudblood”, an derogatory phrase for Muggleborns in the Wizarding World. After questioning Snape about his intentions with the Dark Arts, she finally severed all connection with him. This is a caveat for Lily’s loving nature; while she is kind, she is ultimately not a pushover, and is steadfast in her principles.

That isn’t to say she can’t be stubborn as anything about those principles, though. In fact, when Lily makes her opinion on someone’s character, it is often difficult for her to reconcile her image of someone versus the reality, with Snape as a primary example. Another good example of Lily’s somewhat stubborn views of others can be seen with her future husband, James Potter. When first meeting James, she had a negative opinion of him, motivated in part by his and Sirius Black’s teasing of Snape, who was her friend at the time. This negative opinion only worsened as they got older, despite James’ general popularity, due to her intolerance for his bullying of other students and Potter's arrogance. In fact, it took until Lily’s seventh and final year at Hogwarts to finally change her mind about James and agree to go out with him, and only after James had “deflated his head a bit”. Once she did see past his faults, however, she fell very deeply in love with him. Unfortunately for James, she's being taken from a period of time where she still pretty much disdains him because of old biases.

To her teachers and many of her peers, Lily was known to be a talented, charming and generally popular girl, achieving the honor of Head Girl by her seventh year. She was noted to be talented in Potions and part of the “Slug Club”, the small group of favorite students set up by her Potions professor Horcae Slughorn. Slughorn later described her to Harry as a charming and vivacious girl, quite possibly one of his best students. J.K. Rowling later stated in an interview that she was considered to be a popular during her time at Hogwarts, which can be seen to a slight degree during Snape’s bullying flashback, where she’s seen surrounded by a group of girl by the lake.

It should be noted that Lily could have a fairly fierce temper at points, and a sharp tongue at that. The main victim of her ire, naturally, was James Potter, the main antagonist of her friend Severus Snape. She can be seen arguing with James over his treatment of other students during one of Snape’s memories, and pulls no punches in telling him her exact opinion of him. It even comes to a point where she pulls out her wand, ready to hex James. Most of this disagreement was in his treatment of other students; while James was more black and white in opinions of the houses and the students in them, Lily held people accountable in their actions and not by their houses. She had a zero tolerance policy towards bullying, and while ultimately her efforts were not all that successful in preventing the Marauders from bullying, it again shows high dedication to her principles and the temper to back it up.

As a Gryffindor, another one of Lily’s major defining traits is her bravery. During school she was shown to stand up to other popular students, namely the Marauders, for bullying students, even when James threatened to hex her if she interfered. After graduating from Hogwarts in 1978, she and James joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, despite attempts to recruit them as Death Eaters while they were still in school. While serving with the Order of the Phoenix, James and Lily fought against and escaped Voldemort on three separate occasions up until they had to go into hiding in order to protect Harry. When finally faced with Voldemort and offered the chance to escape with her life at the cost of her son’s, Lily refused to stand aside and still defended him, even though she was wandless, and it ultimately cost her her life.

Background: Lily's entry on the wikia.

Abilities: First and foremost Lily is, most obviously, a witch. She has magical powers that she channels through her wand; it is described as being suited for Charms, implying that she herself has a penchant for Charm work. Even from early on in her life, it is made evident that Lily Evans is an incredibly talented witch with various magical skills. As a child she’s shown to have a certain amount of control over her magical abilities, such as making a flower open and close, making it petals and float in the air after jumping off a swing set, which is a fairly rare skill for someone of pre-school age.

Once arriving at school, she’s noted to have shown an additional penchant for Potions, and as a result was a favorite of Professor Slughorn. Even glimpses of her home life give a small look into her skills as a witch; Petunia’s stories of her sister practicing transfiguration and charm spells at home to show her parents also showcases her skills in both subjects. By her seventh and final year she’s selected as Head Girl, highlighting her overall strength across the major subjects at Hogwarts. Additionally, at age 17 she would almost definitely have the ability to Apparate.

First Person: Lily on the test drive!

Third Person: It was not without some effort that Lily pushed open the weighted lid of her trunk, already worn down with the now seven years of service it’d given her, toting her things to and from school. It was sentimental in some sense, as it was the last time she’d be using it for its intended purpose; in a year’s time it would just be another relic collecting dust in her parents attic, stuffed in between Petunia’s hand-me-downs and the empty cage of a short-lived, small owl Lily had spent days crying over after it had become the victim of the neighbor’s cat. She ran her fingers over the lid, taking a moment to appreciate the battered trunk before setting to the task of packing her things.

First and foremost was the matter of her robes and the rest of her school uniform; as she grabbed them from her drawers she thought back fondly to the first time she’d set foot in Diagon Alley with her parents to purchase them, along with the rest of her first year supplies. At the time she had wanted to laugh at their wide-eyed expressions as they passed bookstores with moving photographs and shops with containers of newts’ eyeballs and porcupine quills stacked in their windows. She hadn’t been much better of course, although Severus had already told her all he could about their world and what she—

She slams her drawer a little too hard, wincing in sympathy for the wooden dresser. It just wasn’t pleasant anymore, thinking about her former friend. Instead of fond memories, all his name seemed to conjure up was his face, angry and hateful as he spit that word, “Mudblood”, at her. At the time she’d been too incensed to be upset, but it lingered like an old wound, aching every so often. She missed him, at points, when Potter would do something foolhardy or she’d figured out a complicated Potions assignment and wanted to share-- but it was done with; Lily shook her head to banish the thought and set about cramming in her cauldron, her books, and a slightly fringed red and gold scarf all into the worn trunk.

As she was almost done, sitting on her trunk in a desperate attempt to keep it closed, she looked over at the letter sitting on her desk, containing the one of the few school things she didn’t intend to pack. Gingerly pushing herself up and pausing slightly to double check that the trunk’s lid had contained its near-bursting contents, she picked up the letter, shaking out its small contents into her palm. The light peeking into through her curtains made the Head Girl pin shine, and she couldn’t help smiling a little at it. It felt like the culmination of so much hard work paying off; she may have had little clue coming into school about magic, but now she was one of the best and brightest of her class. If anything, she couldn’t help but wonder who the Head Boy would be... Remus perhaps? She placed the pin back in the envelope, flopping back on her bed and closing her eyes. Just one more year, then... who knew, really.
